VISUAL ART BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

[ RoyGBiv day (500+ Balloon release) ]
As far as I can tell/have researched, no single day/idea exists like this so I'm going to go ahead and call it my original idea. It instructs upon the subject of color theory and also (a little bit) of installation/performance art. Technically this day could be done with something other than a balloon release but this is a great way to kick it off. HERE is a little more detailed instruction about how we went about doing it.

To my knowledge/research, similar to RoyGBiv day (previous bullet), no idea exists like this and so I consider this to be my own original idea. It upcycles a refrigerator door in order to provide a fully-mobile display unit that is as much a piece of artwork in and of itself as much as the artwork placed on it's surface. It is intended to exist in an open and public space so that it encourages interaction by inspiring people to indulge their own calls to create and then share it with the world. It required me to find a refrigerator door (just the door) and upcycle it.

I love absolutely adore my students and am always looking for ways to show them how much I care of them, love them and appreciate them. This is one way I have found to do that. It's very fun to do but it did require a bit of an investment/commitment on my part in order to make happen. As it has happened, I use it to celebrate the birthdays of my colleagues as well.

Used Rosco brand glow-in-the-dark and black light-sensitive paints to illuminate graffiti style artwork and writings to create an urban and contemporary type setting.

Conceptualization and inspiration for the design was based on how we interpreted Anne Frank's personal view of her world looked - decaying, falling apart, and in a muted color palette.

Included painting a collective of giant flats to look like a snow-capped mountain range, the inside and outside of the abbey (including large framed faux stained-glass windows), the inside of the Von Trapp family estate and outside in the garden, and faux marbling of tall cardboards. Using painted flats allowed for the entire set (for set changes) to be completely modular which is required because of the type of stage and performing arts center we have for stage productions.

Just a snippet of what the set design and painting was. Overall the design was very abstract and was meant to look like a very rogue view of a disjointed world that just went on and on. Basically, the director and producer wanted it to look like distressed wood planking that was everywhere. The overall design was minimal with very few props. Lots of effect painting to look like distressed wood grain. Not my most favorite design only because the painting was a pain.

Included creative processing from start to finish with a look at major pieces of the set and prop making as well as some of the graphic design for printed materials like promo posters and color-coded ticketing. Centerpiece of the entire design was a giant hairspray can made out of a sono tube on wheels that was used in the finale of the show to reveal Edna Turnblad, Tracey's mom.

This is a tutorial that shows you how to make a super hero cape from an old t-shirt. I did this one summer when I was the Arts and Crafts coordinator at the summer daycamp program run by my school for children ages 4-13. It is both fun and easy to do and requires NO sewing (as implied by the name of the project.) To my knowledge, this is my original idea.

This is honestly nothing new or completely original. Last year (2011) is when I think Sharpied mugs were all the rage and I never really got on it. This year I decided to because it gave me a reason to finally get the ridiculously gigantic mugs they sell and I made these mugs for my free best friends at work around Thanksgiving time. I'm happy to report that they were a hit.
