3D DESIGN LESSON IDEAS

In the Fall of 2012, I developed my own teaching methodology for curriculum and instruction for inquiry-based learning in the visual art and design classroom. I have found it works best in a studio art classroom (vs. digital studio) but I believe it can be "flexed" to be applicable to any content-area. A detailed write-up about it can be found HERE.

Uses pre-fab mask forms and employs assemblage with mixed-media

Paper mache, paper sculpting

This came from the Dick Blick lesson idea archive on DickBlick.com

Idea originated from a sculpture artist on Etsy

Pebbled mat board for the planes and foam core board for the base

Installation art study that is collaboratively designed and constructed (across multiple classes). Utilizes tempera color painted in analogous groups in tints and shades and then hung in mobile style down the student art gallery hallway.

Installation art study that was student-centered and collaboratively designed and constructed (across two classes). Utilized paper sculpting and papier mache, string wrapping, spray painting and brush painting, fiber application in order to create a sun, clouds, and rainbow display suspended from the ceiling of the student art gallery hallway. It was originally presented in a week long series that showed the planning and creative processing, the beginning part of the sculpting/working stage, the point just about when everything was done being sculpted, and then some notes about when things went awry and how those things were dealt with. This project was meant to be a re-imagining of The Ombre Experience project idea.

Installation art study that is collaboratively designed and constructed (across multiple classes) upcycling old hardback books and using paper sculpting in order to create a creative display of books exploding with organic shaping as defined by the sculpted pages. There is an 11 minute (or so) video that illustrates how to go about deconstructing the book and then reconstructing it it to see something like what you see below in the example picture.

[Life-sized Sculptures] - this came from an idea I saw once on my blogroll and plays upon the idea of installation art

OpArt study with installation art exhibit presentation that is collaboratively designed and constructed by a single 3D Design class. Utilizes 7x7 inch cubes made of poster board that feature six sides of uniquely designed and carefully created and colored (out of sharpie) OpArt designs. The goal of the project was to show dimension on and within dimension as a way to communicate how the Lord God is extra-dimensional in His existences and by His ways.

Utilizes upcycling of cardboard egg cartons and mastercopying for the paintings themselves.  This idea originated from my blogroll so I cannot take credit for this awesome approach to non-objective art.

Subtractive sculpting a foam block in order to create an originally designed work of art in minimalist-style. The subject matter can be anything but for this project idea it was that the students create a tangible representation of an emotion, idea, thought, or suggestion from a Christian worldview. Could be adapted for it to be a social or cultural commentary.

Takes a continuous line drawing exercise and translates it into a wire sculpture where the line of the wire is intended to embody the continuous line design. Uses 14 gauge aluminum wire and each student received a set amount of wire that they could manipulate as their design required but they could not cut their wire and interrupt the line design.

All lessons listed have been tried at least once in my classroom. Some I have originated but ones that were derived from inspiration elsewhere are noted with links and source information as best as I was able to compile for the purposes of giving credit where credit is due.
